The Pro’s and Con’s of High Speed Internet Services

Vocabulary: Bits, Bits per Second, ISP, Download Speeds, Upload Speeds

Dial Up connections: this is not high speed internet. A computer modem is connected to the telephone jack with Internet connection speeds up to *54mbps (*54 Million Bits per Second). This type of connection now should only be used for voice and faxing.

DSL Internet (Digital Subscriber Line) connection: a very popular high speed internet connection because you can pay a different price for the speed you desire

. For DSL download speeds up to *768kps (768 Thousand bits per second) you can pay between $17.99 and $21.99 per month. For DSL download speeds between *1.5mbps (1.5 Million bits per second) to 3.0mbps (3Million bits per second) you can pay $29.99 to $34.99 per month.

When using DSL, your computer connects to the ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) computers through your telephone lines. When a telephone customer subscribes to DSL, the phone line contains two (2) frequencies, one for voice and the other for high speed Internet access. The DSL Modem separates the voice from data.

DSL Pro’s:

1. Chose of Speeds according to the customer’s budget. (768kbps to 3.0mbps)

2. You have a direct connection from your location to the DSL computers. (No sharing the same line with other customers).

3. DSL is an advanced form of Dial Up connection, whereby a password is still needed for you to access you account.

DSL Con’s:

1. You must live within a certain distance between your location and the DSL servers for DSL to function properly.

2. The customer must install Filters at every telephone jack so there are no interferences between the home phones and DSL signals.

Cable Internet: uses a cable that is shared amongst its customers back to the Cable Companies computers.

Pro’s of Cable Internet:

1. Customers can receive download speeds up to 10mbps (10 Million bits per second).

2. No distance limitations from your location to the Cable Companies to maintain performance.

Con’s of Cable Internet:

1. Price is higher than DSL prices and the cable customer must have prior cable services (like video) in order to receive Cable Internet. The combination of Cable Video and Internet creates larger monthly bills.

2.  No password protection to access the Cable Companies computer (not email access). Cable uses a Machine Access Code located on the Cable Modem. The Machine Access Code must be registered with the cable company to obtain Internet Access.

3. Cable speeds are lowered when a high volume of Cable Video and Internet customers are using services at peak times.

4. Cable companies have and will limit the amount of data that a customer can download per month. This will allow all customers to receive the highest speeds possible.

Fiber Optics Internet: uses Glass Fibers that transmit data (data is transmitted by laser light) to your computer. Fiber technology has been around for a while but has been recently developed to deliver Video and Internet at blazing speeds and outstanding quality.

Pro’s of Fiber Optic Internet:

1. Speeds range from 50mbps download and 20mbps upload.

2. Prices start at $42.99 per month depending on the speed you choose.

3. Some companies offer a Free *Router for Fiber Optic service. (Router allows for multiple PC’s to access a single Fiber Optic connection)

3. Special offers for Free installation to the main PC.

Con’s of Fiber Optic Internet:

1. Installation can vary between 4 to 6 hours and may require drilling and other routing techniques for Fiber Optic cabling.

2. Depending upon service plan, a fee maybe required to network (connect) extra computers to the Fiber Optic connection.

Final Thoughts

Since the 1990's the Internet has become an important tool for Home, Business, Employment, Personal etc. CTS has serviced many computer systems in different environments and discovered that many computers do not achieve maximum Speeds because of::

● Computer System is too old (Hardware and/or Software needs upgrading or replace computer)

●  Computer contains Viruses, Spyware, Malware or Adware

●  Phones lines are too old to deliver sufficient DSL speeds

● Too many DSL phone filters

● Home Security Alarms slows or blocks DSL Signals

● Customer improperly installs "Self Install Kit"

● Wireless Router has no Security (others are sharing your Internet connection, applies DSL and Cable customers)
